Sept 27 2020 - Sunday AM Sermon
The Ugliness of Pharisees
Luke 7:36-50; 11:37-54; 14:1-24
Introduction:
- Here are three opportunities for us to see what religion looks like when the culture of the Pharisees drives behavior (Matt. 5:20). And religion is about behavior, not outward actions where men rule rather than God and the heart is nowhere to be seen (Mk. 7:5-13).
When People are Lost in a Religious Game (Lk. 7:36-50).
- A public display
- A rude welcome: just the basics, no warmth
- Pretty hypocrisy and messy love.
The Hypocrisy of Self-Righteousness (Lk. 11:37-54).
- Ceremony makes for a very cold, unloving religion.
- The complete disconnect in its all representations of ceremony compared with true religion (Jas. 1:27)
- Hypocrisy, in the end, protects itself at all costs (Jn. 11:47-53).
The Blindness of Pride to People (Lk. 14:1-24).
- No matter the severity of the human condition, normal sensitivities are killed by pride (Rom. 1:30)
- Humility is the very opposite of pride (Lk. 9:23).
Conclusion:
- Beware of Religious games!
- Beware of Self-righteousness!
- Beware of Pride!
