In this week’s episode we are joined by Mr John Pascoe and Mr Paul Foster who the founders of SMILE, two extraordinary individuals who have completely revolutionised the delivery of medical education at scale. We spend some time getting to know them behind the scenes alongside the inception of SMILE. They both share their love for medical education and how they suddenly developed the responsibility of educating a whole nation of medical students during lockdown. We discuss the early stages of SMILE, the obstacles they faced and the viral growth to lecturing more than 20,000+ students with more than 1,000+ students tuning in for each lecture.
We share their medical journey from the beginning right from medical school to becoming junior doctors. Discovering what set them on a path to pursue surgery and their advice for future Urology and Orthopaedic trainees. Mr John Pascoe is the President and Founder of SMILE Lectures currently working in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth as an Urology Registrar. He is a graduate of Peninsula Medical School with keen interests in medical education, mentorship & research.
Mr Paul Foster is the Vice President & Founder of SMILE Lectures currently working at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton as an Orthopaedic Teaching Fellow. He is a graduate of King’s College London with keen interests in medical education, paediatric orthopaedics & technology in medicine.
