Why I joined the I-squared podcast, and viewing people with disabilities as subhuman or superhuman
Raven talks about why she decided to join the Intersectional Insights podcast team, and the struggle with preconceived notions often applied to people with disabilities.
Perspective summary:
I understand the sentiment of not wanting to be excluded or an afterthought, and as someone in the disability community, it happens frequently. A soundbite that stuck with me throughout this year is “voting is not enough,” and voting this year did not seem significant to me. This makes me think it’s important to add my voice to those speaking up regarding disability advocacy and education because no matter how many people are educating, there are many more who are unaware.
The overarching issue I have with moving through the world with a disability is people either think we’re subhuman or superhuman. They think you’re better than other people at doing certain things because you have to be attentive in ways others typically aren’t. Or, they think you cannot do certain activities because you are disabled. It’s frustrating living in this space where folks expect you to be much more than what you are, and you have to convince them that you actually need help, or they think you’re not capable at all.
