Would you like to know more about potential strategies and mindsets that can help bring more luck and serendipity into your life? Dr Christian Busch and I discussed this, his bestselling book and much more on Episode 2 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.
In this episode, we will learn about:
Casting your net as wide as possible when applying for jobs as it’s a numbers game,
The process of creating opportunities for serendipity to potentially arise,
Developing a process to deal with the unexpected,
Building meaningful not transactional relationships,
Reframing situations and looking for potential opportunities,
Setting serendipity hooks when meeting new people to find common interests,
Following his passion for serendipity to write his book and
Taking calculated/ managed risks when managing your career similar to a company using a portfolio approach.
Christian is a business professor at USC Marshall and a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE). He served as Inaugural Co-Director of the LSE's Innovation Center, directed NYU’s CGA Global Economy Program, and is the co-founder of Sandbox Network, a global community of young innovators, as well as of Leaders on Purpose, an organization convening leading CEOs.
Christian's bestselling book, The Serendipity Mindset (Penguin Random House), has been highlighted as a "wise, exciting, and life-changing book" (Arianna Huffington, Founder, Huffington Post); a "bracing and hopeful antidote to a world addicted to efficiency and control" (Daniel Pink, Bestselling author of Drive); "highly recommended" (Reid Hoffman, Co-Founder, LinkedIn); and offering "excellent practical guidance for all" (Paul Polman, former CEO, Unilever). The book has been updated and is now called "Connect The Dots: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck."
He describes in his book that he was rebellious as a teenager and this resulted in a life changing event when he ended up in a serious car accident, which made him question the meaning of his life. He developed a keen interest in serendipity from that day onwards and this also helped him to start turning his life around and focus on his academic career, which clearly paid off resulting in his PhD from the LSE!
His research has been published in leading journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, and was featured by Harvard Business Review, Stanford Social Innovation Review, The Guardian, Fast Company, BBC, Forbes, GOOP podcast, WIRED, Handbook of Inclusive Innovation, among others. In 2016, he received the 'Best Paper Award' (Entrepreneurship) of Emerald Publishing, and the 'Best Social Entrepreneurship Paper Award' of the Academy of Management.
The way in which I first came across Christian might have been a story straight from his book. I was watching YouTube in July 2020, saw a talk on The Serendipity Mindset and found it resonated with me. Then I cheekily reached out to him through LinkedIn and he kindly agreed to participate in a webinar that I was organising. The webinar went well and he was kind enough to be the first guest to commit to the podcast.
