There is a fine line between taking necessary steps to save a democracy and overstepping and destroying it. Hans Kelsen said in 1932, “Whoever is for democracy cannot let himself be caught in the fateful contradiction of reaching for dictatorship to save democracy.” This week we take a look at the steps that lead to democratic backsliding and dig into some examples of countries who once were flourishing democracies, and ultimately crossed the line into dictatorship.
