Ep 2: The Story of the Slava, Kolo, and Gusle - Serbian Brands Under UNESCO Protection
The topic of today's podcast is slava, kolo, and gusle: Serbian traditions and practices found on the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The slava is the most characteristic tradition of the spiritual and familial life of Serbs. This is one of the ways that Serbs differ from other Christian and Slavic groups. It is a form of both recognition and identity. In the entire Christian, Balkan, and Slavic world, the Serbs are the only people who celebrate slava.
Kolo is the collective, traditional, and national dance of the Serbs. The kolo is danced by a chain of dancers, and the first and last dancers in the chain have special roles in terms of the movement of the chain, which often moves in a circular, spiral, or snaking motion. Kolo is often danced to musical accompaniment, and includes many different steps.
Gusle is a traditional string instrument with one (sometimes two) strings, which is found among the Serbian people in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Dalmatia, Lika, and Bosanska Krajina.
On the topic of slava, kolo, and gusle, Kristina also talks to Sacha Vigeant.
