This week we are joined by Mr Simon Fleming, an Orthopaedic surgeon and change maker based in London. Tune in as he shares his personal story and the relentless pursuit to change the culture within the NHS. Simon delves into the moments in his career that made him reflect upon his own behaviour and that of others only to realise the underlying toxic cultures that exist within the workplace.
We delve into his #hammeritout campaign aimed at tackling bullying and discriminatory behaviours in the NHS to create positive and empowering workplaces and to improve patient care. Simon shares his experiences with what he describes as “Angels and Villains’ and some of the kickback he has received as a result of his work. Finally we discuss the roles we can all play in difficult and unstable environments even as junior doctors.
Simon is a London-based Trauma and Orthopaedic registrar. He is a co-chair for the International Conference in Residency Education (ICRE), on the advisory board for the NIHR Clinical Education Incubator, Associate Editor for Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher and a Ph.D candidate in Medical Education at Barts & The London Medical School. He is also a past Vice Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Trainee Doctors’ Group (ATDG) and a Past President of the British Orthopaedic Trainees’ Association (BOTA).
While passionate about Orthopaedics, surgical training and mentoring future surgeons, he has special interests in hand surgery, competency decisions and combating bullying, undermining, harassment and the lack of diversity and equity in healthcare, through the award winning #HammerItOut and #CutItOut campaigns, on which he has delivered a TEDx talk and spoken internationally.
