Matthew 6:5-8
In Matthew 6:5–8 Jesus begins his teaching on how his disciples are to pray. Righteous conduct requires prayer and prayer must be sincere. Prayer must not be hypocritical, it must not be a show to get glory from men (6:5). Nor should our prayers multiply words as if God needs us to inform him what is happening (6:7). We do not need to manipulate him into doing something he is reluctant to do. The key to praying rightly, then, is to have a proper view of God. In this text Jesus teaches us to pray sincerely, recognizing that God is both omnipresent and omniscient—that is he is everywhere and all-knowing.
