On the occasion of Palm Sunday, Fr. Eric reflects on the reality of the transcendent God made vulnerable, particularly through the Nativity Story and the image of the suffering Messiah. Topics discussed include the novelty within Christianity of the transcendent God being made immanent; the need to embody the virtue of vulnerability in the vocation of fatherhood; vulnerability as an invitation to intimacy and relationship with God; and the need to respond to Christ’s vulnerability by being vulnerable ourselves, so as to become more docile and effective instruments of God’s salvific grace.
Some examples used during this reflection include the TV show “Superman and Lois” (2021) starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch; Matthew Kelly’s book “Rediscovering Catholicism” (USA: Beacon Publishing, 2010), particularly the secular philosophies of individualism, hedonism and minimalism; and the stand-up comedy show “Homecoming King” (2017) by Hasan Minhaj.
