About the AuthorFrederick M. Hess is a senior fellow and the director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he works on K–12 and higher education issues. The author of Education Week’s popular blog “Rick Hess Straight Up,” Dr. Hess is also an executive editor of Education Next. His scholarly and popular writing has appeared in Harvard Education Review, American Politics Quarterly, Teachers College Record, The Atlantic, The New York Times, the Washington Post, and other outlets. Dr. Hess has taught at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, the University of Pennsylvania, Rice, the University of Virginia, as well as social studies at the high school level. He holds an MA and PhD in government, and a master's in teaching and curriculum from Harvard University. He is the author of more than a dozen books on teaching and education reform.
