Saul reigned for many years as Israel's first king long after God had declared his rule and reign for naught. He was eaten up by his pride and fear even as God gave him time to repent. In contrast, the humility of David, which developed in the daily grind of seemingly insignificant tasks, prepared David for the hand of God.
